Exit Lancaster; Summer Semester

Image
This past month I was involved in an educational mentorship program called Exit Lancaster. This program is located in Lancaster, Pennsylvania and it is based on five pillars; arts, career aspirations, community service, education and wellness. Together these pillars create a "winning life plan". The "plan" helps to provide the necessary tools for students to become successful in life. The program focuses on students in middle school, but as they continue their education the program follows them through high school. As a highschool senior in the program I was given the opportunity to be a mentor to the middle school students and upcoming freshman. I got to spend the month of July with an amazing group of kids and we got to end the summer semester with a trip to New York. Stemming from the southeast of Lancaster County where opportunity and exposure to the world are limited, Exit Lancaster tries to change that and offer something new. The arts pillar f...

7 Things to do this Summer

Image
It's July, despite the fact that back-to-school commercials are on you can still enjoy the rest of your summer. Here are 7 things to do this summer... 1. Build a Fort As a teenager sometimes I forget that I'm still young and doing childish things are acceptable. So pull out the cushions from your couch, grab some blankets and pillows and make your own fort! Invite a sibling or friend to enjoy a movie in your new "home". 2. Make S'mores Easy campfire fun and delicious snack. All you need are graham crackers, chocolate and marshmallows. Roast marshmallows over a hot fire, place on cracker add chocolate and another graham cracker to seal the deal. If you don't have a fire pit but you have a gas stove....Roast some marshmallows over the stove, just make sure you don't burn the house down. 3. Go Swimming Beach, Lake or Pool. Anywhere where you can swim and have fun. Many beaches have free admission and lakes are pretty accessible (...

Fun in the Sun

This summer, go out and try something new! I don't have any major plans but I want to make the best of my summer. Here are a few ideas for things to do during the summer. Going out for ice cream is always a good idea. It is a great way to cool down during a hot summer day. I like ordering the peanut butter cup Friendz at Friendly's. During a weekend when you have nothing planned, its always a good idea take a road trip. Traveling and exploring different places is exciting. Pack a cooler with some sandwiches, snacks and drinks and you're ready to go! Read a book. Very basic, but easy. I love going to my public library and checking out books. I'll usually go to the park or a local cafĂ© to sit and read. These simple things can fill your summer with unexpected memories and wonderful adventures. DIY Decorating Days

Having flowers in a room adds a unique element of nature. For $3 I was able to make this beautiful (and long lasting) piece for my room. I used a couple flowers and a vase to accomplish this. Some things you will need; scissors, hot glue gun and glue, some flowers and a vase. I purchased the two bunches of flowers and the vase at a local dollar store. The vase I used was 3 1/2 inches tall (8 1/2 centimeters). For the look I wanted to achieve, I needed the flowers to be a bit taller so I used the scissors to cut them to 4 inches (10 1/2 centimeters). I used four yellow flowers and five pink to alternate colors. For additional assembly I used flower tape, which is green to match the stems of the flowers. I bunched the flowers together, alternating the colors, and used the tape to secure all the stems. I glued the flowers to bottom of the vase for a secure hold. I added ribbon I already had and some pink heart-shaped pebbles to hide ...

Let's talk about: Racisim

Early today I attended a youth leadership summit about racism. This was an organized event from a university held at the community college in my area. All the surrounding schools in the city were invited. The event started with all of us in a large conference room. We had an introduction by an inspiring speaker that was a graduate from the community college. He spoke about his journey of higher education and beyond. After that we had two sessions during the day, everyone was randomized in the first session and the second session we chose. The first session was literally an open discussion of racism. There were two other adults in my room and they presented topics to our group. For example something they asked us was, what is the definition racism. Then one of our supervisors presented us with a definition; systemic power + racial prejudice. She continued to deconstruct this definition, explaining that being pre judged for your race and having someone with power make it so. When segre...

American Dream: Likes & Followers

Image
So earlier this school year my English teacher gave an assignment to our class to write an essay on the American dream and this is what I wrote about.... The American dream for 2015 is to become famous. Through social media this goal of fame is not that far, it is only a click away. Through Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, Vine, YouTube and more, many people have been noticed by the general public. Many artists like Austin Mahone, Justin Bieber and Becky G have been noticed through YouTube and are now top recording artists. Becky G even got to preform her hit single "Shower" at the Teen Choice Awards this past year. Also beauty vlogger (video blogger) Bethany Mota has ben noticed through YouTube and has had many opportunities. She has her own fashion line with Aeropostale, was on season 19 of Dancing with the Stars and has over 7 million subscribers on her YouTube channel. Although the American dream is wonderful it doesn't come without fault, with social...

Dealing With Loss

This past Thursday I lost my beloved dog Hershey... She was a Chihuahua and her birthday was on Monday. I know, I know really heart breaking but honestly I had the best 9 years with her and I will always remember her in my heart. On the day that it happened I had to go to school, but the previous night my family knew she wasn't feeling well so they were planning on taking her to the doctor that morning. So as I went to school and saw Hershey one last time she seemed to have a sad look in her eyes, like she knew that it was her time. That afternoon I had just walked home from school as I entered my house I noticed the gate was gone (Hershey was very small, as Chihuahuas are so she was kept in the kitchen). At first I dismissed it but as I continued to walk into the kitchen my mom had asked me if I knew (my dad was supposed to pick me up after school but he went to the wrong building) and I didn't know but I wasn't surprised when she told me. Hershey had died. At...
